Shizuka Kusano is one of the most admired textile artists in Japan. She works particularly on the decoration of kimono, obi (sashes) and tapestries. She has been teaching at various institutes, and partook in more than thirty exhibitions. One of her most important books is The Fine Art of Kimono Embroidery (New York: Kodansha America, 2006, reprint 2012).

She took up embroidery, in the European style, in 1969, in order to create a hobby next to her obligations as a young mother. Two years later she started embroidering in the traditional Japanese style, decorating her own kimono. In December 2013 and January 2014, the large Tokyo department store of Matsuya Ginzo organised an exhibition of some 140 pieces of her work, produced over the previous forty years.
