Embroidered Woman's Jacket (China)

Embroidered jacket made in China for the European market, c. 1930's-1960s. Embroidered jacket made in China for the European market, c. 1930's-1960s. Copyright Victoria and Albert Museum, London, acc. no. FE.108-2009.

The Victoria and Albert Museum in London holds a woman's jacket (71 cm from collar to hem), made of silk, and embroidered with very brightly coloured silk threads using satin stitch. The jacket was made in China, obviously for a Western market.

The embroidery shows figures dressed in 1930's style (including the cheongsam), with Eastern landscapes and motorcars. The jacket has a label with the words "Woolland Brothers", referring to the London department store with that name, which closed in 1967.
