De Duitse indigoverver, Georg Stark, en het Textile Research Centre, hebben samen een tentoonstelling opgezet over een intrigerend aspect van een gedeeld Duits-Nederlands cultureel erfgoed, namelijk het verven van textiel met indigo. De tentoonstelling is ondersteund door de regering van de deelstaat Niedersachsen, in Duitsland.
Het oude ambacht van het verven met indigo is toegevoegd aan de UNESCO-lijst van Duits cultureel erfgoed en wordt in Duitsland op allerlei manieren ondersteund. Georg Stark is als ambachtsman zelf ook erkend door UNESCO.
In Nederland is de situatie echter anders. De laatste indigo-werkplaats in Nederland was in Staphorst, voor de productie van het zogenaamde stipwerk, maar die is ongeveer dertig jaar geleden gesloten. Dit was des te meer onfortuinlijk, omdat volgens verschillende bronnen de eerste werkplaats voor indigo in Europa juist in Nederland werd geopend, tegen het einde van de zeventiende eeuw.
In the exhibition, Georg Stark, from Jever in Ost-Friesland, presents his own work. At the same time, the exhibition shows the work of the last indigo dyeing workshop in the Netherlands, which was run by Kob Vloedgraven in Staphorst. These include examples of the famous 'stipwerk', well-known from the traditional costume of the region. The exhibition also shows precious, centuries-old dyed and printed textiles, made of linen and silk, and old receipes written in secret formulas. Textile students of Osnabrück University will show their new designs using ancient indigo techniques.
The exhibition will discuss and visualise the origins of indigo dyeing in India and the transfer of some indigo designs via Egypt to Europe.
Whether some well-known phrases about 'Blue Monday' ('Blauwe Maandag in Dutch) or 'Out of the blue' actually derive from the old craft of indigo dyeing will be discussed by Georg Stark at the opening of the exhibition on 7th November. This is said in an old German poem:
