Examples of kumihimo braiding.Examples of kumihimo braiding.Kumihimo is an ancient Japanese braiding and cording technique. It means 'gathered threads' and involves the interlacing of threads, often silk, with the use of special frames. Originally it was part of the manufacture of Samurai warrior armour. It developed from there into items for fashion and jewellery. For more information about this ancient technique, click here for the Wikipedia page.

In this workshop we will use a foam disk to create different round braids. We will also help you to make a starting point to design your own braids. Everyone is welcome, and no prior braiding experience is required.

The workshop is given by Alice van Duijnen, who is experienced in many textile techniques ever since she learned knitting at the age of 6. She has taught knitting, crochet making and weaving. As volunteer at the TRC she works on the technique-oriented Reference Collection.
