This study day will look at medieval, and later, printed textiles to help identify the various techniques that were applied to print motifs and texts onto garments and household textiles. The main techniques that will be looked at are block printing, screen printing and 20th century roller printing. Attention will also be paid to direct, resist and discharge forms.
There will be the chance to explore the main design differences between 1920’s – 1980’s Western printed textiles. In addition, attention will be paid to the impact of Indian painted and printed textiles on European printed textiles from the 17th to the 20th century, with particular attention for the main forms of chintz and Tissu Provençal forms (see the TRC blog of 6 August 2020).
Throughout the day, use will be made of examples from the TRC’s extensive collection of printed textiles.
