Textile History: The Journal of the Pasold Research Fund Ltd., Volume 49, No. 1, May 2018. Routledge Taylor & Francis Group, Abingdon, illustrated with b/w and colour photographs, graphs and charts, 140 pp., individual subscription (print and online) euros 74. Published twice a year (in May and November).

This is a peer-reviewed professional journal that is celebrating its fiftieth year of publication. This issue includes five well-researched articles, which reflect the publication’s international academic approach. The first article is on sixteenth to eighteenth century ‘tapissierspanden” in Antwerp and Brussels. Other articles are far ranging in topic: There is a reconsideration of the ancient Greek word halourgos (purple in English) and its relation to ancient textiles; a look at documented recipes for dyes and dyeing in China’s Ming and Qing dynasties; a history of the smock; and an examination of Queen Mary’s lace train of 1911.

The full colour illustrations add immense value to the articles. Each issue also includes reviews of new exhibitions (e.g., at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the V&A Museum) and books (there are eight in this particular issue). This journal is an important outlet for current research that textile curators, historians and serious collectors will want to read.
