TRC Asia Week lecture by Francesco Monuori (Leiden University / TRC), on Monday 15th July, 14.00 - 15.00 PM.
This talk will discuss the long history of the trade in textiles and garments between Europe and Japan, which started in the seventeenth century, and their influence upon local European and Japanese sartorial developments.
The main part of the talk will concentrate on developments from the end of the nineteenth century. It will look at how kimonos were adapted for the Western market, the adoptation of Western style clothing in Japan (noting the viewpoints of intellectuals, such as Nagai Kafu), and the resistance to these changes (including how Jun’ichiro Tanizaki fought against Western clothing trends).
There will then be a discussion about what happened after World War II (1939-1945) and about the development of Western-style clothing chains (e.g. UNIQLO) in Japan. The final phase of the talk will briefly concentrate on the concepts of exchange, hybridity and modernity.
