This TRC study day looks into the subject of 'what is velvet?' and examines its origins in medieval northern Italy, its spread to the Middle East and Persia, as well as its movement to other parts of Europe over the last 800 years.

Attention will be paid to making and identifying the main types of velvets and how it has been used over the centuries. The day includes a strong practical element, including the making of small samples of velvet. The necessary equipment and yarns will be provided. A knowledge of weaving is not essential.
Throughout the day participants will have the chance to see and examine a wide range of velvets, imitation velvets, as well as fake forms, all from the TRC's extensive collection of velvets. Participants will be given small samples of a range of basic velvet types to take home with them.
The study day continues the knowledge and experience built up by the TRC in preparation of the Velvet exhibition at the TRC, in 2019. The study day will be led by Gillian Vogelsang, director of the TRC.
