Poplin

Poplin, also known as popeline or tabinet/tabbinet, is a type of plain weave that produces a fine, but thick cloth. It is generally made of cotton, but the most expensive, and original poplin is made from silk with wool.

For traditional poplin, the silk is used for the warp, while the wool, with a thicker yarn, is used for the weft. This gives the material a ribbed appearance. The ribbed structure is mostly lost when poplin is made from one type of fibre. Most of the modern poplin is made from cotton. Modern poplin is often used for shirts and coats.

Poplin originates from the Avignon area in southeastern France, where in the late Middle Ages the pope had established his residence, hence the name of the weave.
