Chequered Chain Band

The chequered chain band. The chequered chain band.

The chequered chain band is an embroidery technique that is worked downwards and with two needles, often with threads with different colours. This composite stitch is often used to create a wide border.

First a column is made with horizontal straight stitches. Then the loop of a chain stitch is made with one of the needles (sometimes with a doubled thread), with the needle and thread passing under one of the horizontal stitches. Then the second needle is inserted from underneath the next horizontal stitch, and passed through the loop of the first stitch thereby making a chain stitch. Subsequently the first needle is inserted from underneath the second loop, creating a second chain stitch, etc.
