Piece Sampler

A piece sampler is a term used by some authors to describe a collection of small pieces of cloth (samples) on which a person has worked out a new stitch or pattern.

These pieces were then fastened together in some manner to act as a reference collection for future use, including showing potential clients a range of designs. The oldest surviving piece samplers date from the twelfth century AD and they can be found in Middle Eastern as well as European contexts.
