The Izumo Museum of Quilt Art is the first quilt museum in Japan. The main collection on display consists of the work of Ms. Mutsuko Yawatagaki. The museum was opened in 2006 and is located in the Izumo region, which is widely considered to be one of the cradles of Japanese art and civilisation.

Ms. Yawatagaki was a clothing designer by profession and started teaching quilting classes in 1990 in Kamo Town. She quickly became a leading figure within the Japanese art quilting world. Ms. Yawatagaki often uses fabrics of actual kimono that are between 100 and 300 years old. Her idea is to propagate and develop the unique culture of the Izumo region by means of her quilts by bringing together quilting, a Western art form, and kimono that is the quintessential, traditional form of Japanese clothing. Her work is thus regarded as representing a fusion between oriental and occidental art, concepts and techniques.

The Museum itself is housed within a 200 years old building and is a typical example of traditional Japanese architecture from the Izumo region. The museum organises four exhibitions a year, one for each of the seasons that are so important within Japanese cultural and social life. The exhibitions are organised in such a way that visitors can experience not only Ms. Yawatagaki’s works, but also the atmosphere and landscape of the Izumo region.
