Tiraz: The Widad Kawar Home for Arab Dress

Tiraz: Widad Kawar Home for Arab Dress, in Amman, Jordan. Tiraz: Widad Kawar Home for Arab Dress, in Amman, Jordan.

"Tiraz: The Widad Kawar Home for Arab dress" is a private collection of garments, textiles and jewellery, which was built up by Widad Kawar(Amman, Jordan). Tiraz (for short) was opened to the public in 2014. The word tiraz refers to a medieval Arab tradition of embroidering and, later in time, weaving inscriptions into textiles.

The Tiraz/Widad Kawar collection includes over 2000 garments, textiles, accessories, notably jewellery and relevant tools and materials. It specialises in Palestinian and Jordanian costume, but the collection also includes items from surrounding countries, including Egypt, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Turkey, Yemen, etc.

Tiraz further specialises in embroidered forms, especially those found on Palestinian dresses. Tiraz also collects written and visual sources, as well as oral traditions about the history and use of embroidery within Palestinian and Arab costume heritage, in order to preserve and encourage the study, understanding and use of this form of material culture.
