Textile Museum, St. Gallen

The Textile Museum, St. Gallen, Switzerland. The Textile Museum, St. Gallen, Switzerland.

The Textile Museum at St. Gallen reflects the intriguing history of the huge local embroidery industry that developed here, mainly following the invention and introduction of hand machine embroidery machines in the early nineteenth century.

The collection of the museum contains Coptic textiles from Egypt, European embroideries from the fourteenth century onwards, many forms of handmade lace, textiles from ethnological sources, historical costumes and needlework tools. The hand and machine embroideries and tools from the St Gallen production centres reflect the fascinating history of the embroidery industry in the St. Gallen area and eastern Switzerland in general..
