Lecture and workshop on Taiwanese indigo dyeing, Thursday 18th July, 09.30 - 12.30, repeated 14.00 - 17.00.
Lecture: The Innovation and Upgrade of a Taiwanese Indigo Industry.
Indigo dyeing is a traditional handicraft in Taiwan. It is an industry which has been adapted to its local culture, full of aesthetic feeling and environmentally friendly. Although it was almost completed replaced by chemical dyeing and nearldisappeared from Taiwan, nowadays there are numerous indigo workshops all around the country making indigo dyestuff, indigo dyed clothes and indigo art works.
This time, we are going to present the Indigo Dyeing House. This company is involved in the whole process of the indigo industry, from growing indigo fields to branding indigo dyed products, and combining leisure business and indigo dyeing culture. Over the last ten years, the Company has become the largest indigo brand in Taiwan.
The lecture will be followed by a practical tye-dye (shibori) workshop, making round circle ties (根捲絞、捲上絞等), flat stitching ties (平縫染) and mountain patterns (山水圖樣) etc.), using needles, strings and plastic bags.
The event will be presented and demonstrated by the founder of the Indigo Dyeing House, Ms. Cheng, and her son, James Cho.
