Lecture by Ang John, on Wednesday 17 July, from 14.30 - 15.30, at the Textile Research Centre (TRC), Hogewoerd 164, Leiden.

This paper will focus on what types of batiks Malays preferred as opposed to Javanese, Indo Dutch and Chinese Peranakan batiks. It will discuss what types of batiks were made by the Malays for themselves and and what types of batiks were made by others specifically for the Malay market. It is my hope that through going through these differences we can see the complexity and multi-layered nature of the requirements and tastes of the people in Southeast Asia and we can gain a deeper understanding of the mindset of the Malay people.

Participants of the International Convention of Asia Scholars (ICAS) have free entry; others pay 5 euro. For both groups please register in advance: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
