Eighteenth Century Dutch Sampler

The Textile Research Centre (TRC), Leiden, houses a remarkable sampler (merklap) that dates to the eighteenth century or earlier and is made of linen worked with silk (pulled cross stitch).

The sampler is filled with a wide variety of motifs, including a stepped gable house, men with swords and staffs, trees of various types, flowers (carnations, roses, tulips, daisies) in baskets and vases, birds (peacocks, parrots, doves in a dovecot), men carrying large grapes (Numbers 13:23), very large deer, and so forth.
