A canvas guide is a piece of cloth, the use of which was developed together with the advent of fine, machine woven cloth, when it became more difficult to produce counted thread embroidery.

In the nineteenth century, when machine woven cloth came to dominate the market, embroiderers started to baste a piece of soft canvas (the canvas guide), with a visible mesh, on top of the ground material and then they embroidered over it. Once the design or object was finished, the canvas threads were pulled out. This technique has been adopted by many embroiderers and is still being used in the early twenty-first century.
