A water colour and pastel by the Swiss-French artist, Jean-Étienne Liotard (1702-1789) and dated 1762, shows Maria Amalia (1746-1804), archduchess of Austria and the future Duchess of Bourbon-Parma, engaged in embroidery.

Maria Amalia was a daugher of Empress Maria Theresa (1717-1780) and Francis I (1708-1765), the Holy Roman Emperor, and the sister of Marie Antoinette (1755-1793), who was painted by the same artist.

The portrait measures 31.8 x 25.7 cm. The painter, Liotard, was nicknamed 'The Turk', for his wearing Oriental clothing following a trip to the Middle East.
