The Aemilia Ars society was founded in the Italian town of Bologna on the 3rd December 1898, drawing inspiration from the Arts and Crafts Movement in the United Kingdom. It aimed at promoting and supporting the decorative arts in the region of Emilia, taking its inspiration from Nature and regarding the Renaissance as the period of the greatest beauty and the pinnacle of crafts.

The Aemilia Ars foundation was instigated, among others, by Alfonso Rubbiani and Achille Casanova. It was particularly interested in the revival of metal and wood work, embroidery, and especially needlepoint lace making, for which the Society, and the town of Bologna, became especially famous, also after the demise of the Foundation in 1903, five years after its foundation.

Lace production in Italy received another boost with the International Milan Exhibition of 1906.
