The Whitworth Art Gallery ("The Whitworth") in Manchester was established in 1889 with the name of the Whitworth Institute and Park, on the basis of a bequest by Sir Joseph Whitworth (1803-1887). The founder was Robert Darbishire. Since 1958 it forms part of the Victoria University of Manchester (now the University of Manchester).

Joseph Whitworth, 1803-1887.The collection of the Whitworth Art Gallery includes water colours, sculptures and also many textiles. Many of these were acquired via Sir John Charles Robinson (1824-1913), who was the first Superintendent of the South Kensington Museum.

The textile collection includes fragments and garments from first millennium Egypt, Mediterranean and Islamic embroideries, South Asian fabrics, French and Italian silks, the work of William Morris and other designers associated with the Arts and Crafts Movement, and artist-designed textiles.
