hardcover with dustjacket

Genuine folk dress, as distinct from fake national costume, is rooted in the history of particular regions. It is primarily rural peasant and non-fashionable urban working-class costume - at its most elaborate expression in the 18th and 19th centuries and, as a last flowering, in the 20th century. Folk dress expressed the community;s need for ritual clothes and so into it went the most striking designs, attractive detail and gorgeous colour.  This book includes scholarly text on each of 26 classic traditions; each area is illustrated with authentic and historical illustrations and 24 magnificent full-colour plates on 24 pages by the celebrated illustrator Victor Ambrus.
